If Hornsby stayed with the band do you think the end result would have been the same? Maybe Jerry's demons would have still caught up to him, I don't know. What I do know is the Dead made some beautiful music w/ Hornsby playing keys. Specifically, 9/19/90 MSG show. The Let It Grow leads into an awesome pre-drum interlude between Jerry & Bruce that is some of the most serene "jamming" you will ever hear.

If Hornsby stayed w/ the Dead, we'd miss hearing Brent and Vince's wifes bitch like there was no tomorrow.

I may be wrong, but it seems to me that Bruce was not down with playing with a junkie. If Jerry had been able to pull out of his tailspin, perhaps Bruce would have stuck around. I know, simplistic - I'm sure the fact that Bruce had his own band, etc., was a contributing factor as well.
We can only speculate, but I agree that the band as a whole, and Jerry in particular, were not so inspired for awhile before Bruce and seldom, if ever, after Bruce.

...as a hole,

a junkie will steal your wallet, go downtown, buy some dope, come back and ask you if you'd like to get high.

a crankster will steal your wallet, go downtown, buy some dope, come back, and help you look for your wallet.

music deserves good solid energy.

Just going by things he's said many times I think that Bruce wasn't down with them copping out and refusing to take musical chances like they did back in the day when he saw him and back in the day when they did. That said it is obvious to me from what I witnessed and what I've heard that he lit a HUGE musical fire under their ass and it shows. Funny thing to me is that even though his own solo music got more interesting too, I still find it pretty middle of the road kind of stuff.
